Description

Build or refresh your skills in the world of retirement incomes with our two part masterclass. This Masterclass was held on 14 March, with the second session held on 21 March.

Details

More Australians than ever are looking to their super to play a greater role in providing for their retirement.  Treasury modelling shows that 1.6m people 65 or over are currently receiving income from a super product but over the next 10 years, an estimated 2.5m Australians will move from the accumulation phase to the retirement phase.

Yet, surveys show that many Australians don’t have a good understanding of our super system, particularly when it comes to retirement.  For example, in a recent survey 19% of people who were drawing down on their pension at the minimum rate said they were doing so because they thought the minimum was a Government recommendation.  Many others are paying taxes in accumulation phase when they could be in a tax free pension environment.

Accountants and advisers play an important role in educating clients so they can confidently draw down on their super in retirement.

In this two part masterclass, our SMSF experts will build or refresh your skills in the world of retirement incomes including:

  • Walking you through when pensions can start and what needs to happen beforehand

  • Identifying key documentation

  • Explaining how the payment limits are calculated, what documentation is needed, and when payments need to be made

  • Exploring the available tax exemptions, and the impact of stopping/starting pensions or drawing lump sums

  • Dealing with the death of a pensioner

  • Making the most of common pension strategies

  • Answering your day to day questions – for example, can contributions continue once pensions commence and if so what are the options for minimising tax, if an SMSF has lumpy assets are valuations needed before pensions commence, can a pension end after only one payment?

  • Knowing what to do when things go wrong

This masterclass is relevant for all accountants and advisers with clients with super balances, whether held in an SMSF or non-SMSF, although a particular focus will be on SMSFs.

Audience
  • Accountants and administrators preparing SMSF accounts

  • Business service accountants with clients with super benefits (SMSF or non-SMSF)

  • Advisers with clients with super benefits (SMSF or non-SMSF)

  • SMSF auditors

Not appropriate for non-professionals (ie SMSF trustees)

Relatively new to super and not sure if you are ready for a masterclass?

Whilst our masterclasses are aimed at refreshing skills, closing knowledge gaps and extending the learning of professionals with some experience, our “beginning to end” approach ensures you’re able to participate even if your current knowledge isn’t extensive.  We focus on the practical knowledge you need to help your clients rather than just the niche or unusual cases.
