Training & Seminars
In direct response to feedback from SMSF professionals, Heffron has developed a range of training services designed to meet the needs of people who require a more advanced and practical insight into SMSFs. As SMSF practitioners, Heffron is able to deliver training that is both topical and relevant so that ideas can be easily implemented in an attendee's practice.
Our key public training session is our annual Advanced SMSF Training Day. Heffron also runs a 3-day intensive SMSF training course and offers in-house training sessions for advisers and accountants.
SMSF Advice - 3-Day Intensive Training Course
We offer a comprehensive 3-day course to assist advisers and accountants enhance their SMSF advice capabilities or dealer groups looking to provide a high quality SMSF accreditation option for its advisers. The course is also designed to prepare professionals for SPAA's SMSF specialist adviser ("SSA") accreditation examination and make sure all the bases are covered.
The training is structured as a mixture of presentations and workshops so as to ensure the practical implications are reinforced and we limit the number of attendees per course to encourage debate and discussion within the group.
We cover off on all of the essential areas including
- In-house assets
- Pensions
- Borrowings
- Payment of benefits
- Residency and taxation of fund income
- Contribution rules
- Trust deeds
This course has also been accredited by SPAA (46 points) and the FPA (39 points - ranked in the top 2% of all CPD accredited courses by the FPA).

Specialist In-house Training
Given our specialist SMSF expertise as practitioners, we also provide In-House Training with either a strategic advice or compliance focus.
In respect of our strategic advice stream, we generally propose a quarterly in-house training program targeted towards the senior planners or partners of the firm, which is designed to cover high level strategic ideas and opportunities. In terms of topics we develop a program with the client each 30 June to suit their internal needs and structure each session so there is a presentation and workshop component.
In respect of our compliance stream, we generally propose a quarterly in-house training program targeted towards the para-planning team or the accounting team handling the SMSF work. Some suggested topics with a compliance focus would include:
- Contributions – who can and how much
- What can super funds invest in?
- In-House assets in detail
- Benefits – access, forms and options
- How SMSFs are taxed
- SMSF audit update
- What happens on death?
