We have attached below a range of useful articles prepared by the Heffron technical team for SMSF practitioners.

Corporate or Individual Trustee?

When you establish a self managed superannuation fund, one of the first issues to consider is whether the trustee should be a company or a group of individuals. There is no right or wrong answer and this article sets out some of the issues to consider.

Superannuation Technical Corner

The rules surrounding who can contribute to super, the actual timing of contributions, the taxation treatment of benefit payments and the taxation treatment of death benefits are complicated. Following the Superannuation Simplification changes, there have been significant changes in these areas including limits on the amount that can be contributed each year.

We have prepared a series of tables below which can be used to assist you in understanding the rules in respect of contributions and the payment of benefits.

Should you have any questions in respect of these tables please do not hesitate to contact our office on 1300 172 247.

30 June - Strategic Advice Focus

June always brings a flurry of activity as advisers, accountants and SMSF trustees make their final preparations for the end of the financial year. It is at that time that individuals make sure they have contributed, paid their pensions up to date, explored opportunities to access the government's co-contribution, maximised their salary sacrifice opportunities and many more.

The attached document highlights some special issues to consider come 30 June.

Contribution Caps

As most SMSF practitioners and SMSF trustees will attest, the Simple Super changes have transferred a significant amount of the complexity from the back end to the front end with the introduction of contribution caps. As part of our involvement with the ATO's National Tax & Liaison Group (Superannuation) committee, we have been working with Treasury to remedy some of the unintended consequences of the caps and have attached our recent correspondence on this matter.
